This circuit board is the “brain” that brings to life HAL’s backlit indicators, tactile switches, and ambient mood lighting.
The circuit board houses a microcontroller, the LED for each of the ten backlit pushbutton-indicators, an “SPDT” (“single pole, double throw”) switch for each button, plus a driver for the LED strip that goes around the perimeter of the Console to provide ambient mood lighting.
The PCB also has connects to the power supply and to the other circuits in the HAL unit. The numerous holes around each LED are for attaching the elaborate custom-designed mechanical key stacks we have developed (as shown in the Feb 22 HAL update).
Our carefully designed custom keycaps look just like the backlit keys on Discovery’s control panels, but unlike the movie set, our keys can change color and are fully operational with tactile feel and “clicky” sound!
Our next update will show pictures of the initial tooling and completed prototype parts that have been being made at the factory so stay tuned!
