The year is 2001. Not the 2001 we know, in which humanity spawned the Academy Award-winning “Shrek.” In the 2001 of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” humans are capable of visiting Jupiter and creating a murderous artificial intelligence. I’m starting to think we underperformed in real life.

Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film follows humankind's attempts to trace the origins of a strange artifact that is thought to influence human evolution. This involves watching some early hominids learn how to hit each other with bones, seeing a spaceflight layover at the moon, and a very lonely sentient computer named Hal.

Now I could go on and on about how “2001: A Space Odyssey” is a masterpiece that everyone should see, and how it’s one of the most influential and referenced science-fiction films ever made. Those are both excellent reasons to watch it. But if you don’t care about that, you should just watch it because it’s super weird.
